There’s a lot to look forward to in Cub Scouting, but the "lingo" can be confusing when you are new! There are a few things that are helpful to know when you’re getting started; here’s a quick look at how our Pack works, what to expect throughout the year, and some of the traditions and adventures our Scouts look forward to most.
Most dens meet about twice each month in our classroom at the Martin H. Glynn Building in Valatie. Each Den Leader sets the schedule for their own den, so meeting days and times may vary.
Den meetings are where much of the Cub Scout adventure happens! Scouts work together on activities toward their rank, explore elective adventures, learn new skills, make things, play games, and have fun with the other Scouts in their den.
Parents or caregivers attend den meetings with Lion, Tiger, Wolf, and Bear Scouts. Beginning with the Webelos rank, parents are not required to stay, although families are always encouraged to stay involved and connect with their Den Leader.
About once a month, all of our dens come together for a Pack meeting or activity, usually on the fourth Wednesday of the month. No two Pack meetings look exactly alike! We might head to a corn maze, play yard games, gather for activities and awards, or hold one of our favorite Pack-wide events. Some months, a special event like the Pinewood Derby takes the place of our regular Pack meeting.
Pack meetings and activities are a chance for Scouts from all of our dens—and their families—to have fun together and be part of the larger Pack 2113 community.
Getting outdoors is a big part of Scouting! Throughout the year, Pack 2113 participates in Camporees and other camping opportunities offered through our Council. These give our Scouts a chance to camp alongside other Cub Scout Packs and take part in activities they don't get to do at an ordinary meeting.
The highlight of the year is summer resident camp at the Rotary Scout Reservation. We typically arrive on Sunday and stay through Wednesday, giving our Scouts several days to camp, explore, and take part in all kinds of outdoor adventures. It's a Pack favorite that our Scouts look forward to all year!
We also hold a Pack campout in the winter, usually at Rotary Scout Reservation.
Camping with the Pack is a family experience, and details about each trip—including registration, what to bring, meals, and sleeping arrangements—are shared with families before each event.
Our primary fundraiser is the annual Scout Popcorn Sale. Popcorn sales help support Pack 2113 and make many of our activities and adventures possible while helping keep the cost of Scouting affordable for our families.
Throughout the year, we may also participate in additional fundraising opportunities and community events to support Pack activities. Details about fundraisers and ways families can participate are shared directly with Pack families as they come up.
Information about our annual popcorn sale, including important dates and how to participate, is shared each fall.
The Pinewood Derby is one of Pack 2113's biggest and most anticipated traditions! Each Scout receives an official Pinewood Derby car kit from the Pack and, with help from their family, turns a simple block of wood into a one-of-a-kind race car.
Scouts can get as creative as they'd like with their designs. Some Scouts buy decorations and accessories from the Scout Shop, others add their own from home, but all cars must follow the official Pinewood Derby rules to race.
We hold our Derby in January, with Scouts competing to see whose creations make it down the track the fastest. There are also prizes for the best hot rod, the best Scouting-themed car, and "Cubmaster's Choice." Pinewood Derby awards are presented at our Blue & Gold celebration in February.
Each February, we celebrate the anniversary of Scouting with our Blue & Gold Banquet, one of our favorite Pack traditions. Families come together for breakfast, recognition, awards, and a celebration of everything our Scouts have accomplished.
Blue & Gold is also a particularly special day for our oldest Cub Scouts. Our Arrow of Light Scouts are recognized for completing their Cub Scout journey and take part in their crossover ceremony as they prepare to move on to Scouts BSA.
At our final Pack meeting of the school year, we celebrate how much our Scouts have accomplished! Families are invited to join us as Scouts are recognized, receive the rank patches they've earned, and officially move up to their next den.
Our Arrow of Light Scouts have already celebrated their transition from Cub Scouting at Blue & Gold in February, so this ceremony recognizes our Lion through Webelos Scouts as they get ready for their next year of adventures.
